The “4-in-1” Education Model
UM implements a ‘4-in-1’ model of education, which consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education. The purpose of the ‘4-in-1’ model is to provide a multifaceted education to students to help them acquire professional expertise, extensive knowledge, a broader mindset, and real-world experience. Every undergraduate student at UM must meet the requirements in the four areas before they can graduate.
Discipline-specific education: Specialism is an important hallmark of university education. The increased degree of division of labour and occupational specialisation makes discipline-specific education not only reasonable but also necessary. For this reason, UM is committed to constantly improving the quality of its discipline-specific education.
General education: General education breaks through the boundaries of traditional discipline-specific education. It aims to nurture erudite students who can fuse different realms of knowledge into an integrated whole. UM began to reform its undergraduate curriculum in 2008, with new general education courses covering four areas being launched.
Research and internship education: UM implements a research and internship programme for undergraduate students, with a focus on innovation and practice. Through the programme, UM provides various opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in scientific research and internships. Many undergraduate students at UM have published their research findings at top academic conferences and in academic journals. They have also received numerous awards at regional and international competitions.
Community and peer education: UM is the first university in Asia to have a complete—and the biggest—system of residential colleges. Currently there are ten residential colleges at UM. Through systematic planning of all courses, programmes, and activities, the colleges aim to help students develop soft skills in five areas, namely Healthy Living, Interpersonal Relation and Teamwork, Leadership and Service, Cultural Engagement, and Citizenship with a Global Perspective.
