The University of Macau (UM) recently awarded scholarships to 178 outstanding students at the UM Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2018. More than 400 UM students received scholarships in the past year.

In his speech, UM Rector Yonghua Song congratulated the scholarship recipients and thanked the scholarship donors. He said that the donations from various institutions and individuals show recognition of the university’s effort in promoting higher education development in Macao in the past three decades. He added that he is happy to see the students’ outstanding achievements in various areas, which shows that UM is a comprehensive university with a high degree of internationalisation. During the ceremony, Chan Cheng Sam, a second-year student from the Faculty of Law, who is also a member of Choi Kai Yau College, received the Whole Person Development Scholarship. She thanked the donor for the scholarship, adding that the Whole Person Development Programme gave her many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, which have enriched her college life and taught her how to communicate with others. She expressed hope to give back to society and UM.

In the 2017/2018 academic year, UM received a total of MOP 4 million in academic prizes and scholarships from more than 50 institutions and individuals. The awards and scholarships were presented to students at the university’s convocation, congregation, as well as the honorary degree and higher degree conferment ceremony. At this ceremony, 178 UM students received scholarships worth a total of MOP 1.63 million, donated by 40 institutions and individuals.
