Zhang Jinming, a PhD graduate of the University of Macau (UM), was ranked the first on the list (2018-2020) of awardees under the Young Elite Scientist Sponsorship Programme organised by the China Association for Science and Technology.

Zhang joined UM for PhD studies in 2012. His supervisors were Wang Yitao, director of UM’s Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, and associate professor Chen Meiwan from the same institute. After obtaining his PhD degree from UM in 2016, Zhang was recommended to join Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He was promoted to associate professor only a year later and was selected in 2018 to join the Thousand Talent Programme. A researcher on the pharmaceutics of traditional Chinese medicine, Zhang has led various national- and provincial-level research projects and has published 30 papers as either the first author or corresponding author, which have been included in the Science Citation Index (SCI).

The Macao SAR government and UM attach great importance to the development and industrialisation of Chinese medical technologies. In July this year, UM Rector Yonghua Song visited Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and signed an agreement with the university to establish an alliance for innovations in Chinese medical sciences. The agreement aims to increase collaboration in personnel training between universities, research institutes, and industry inside and outside of mainland China in order to promote teaching, research, and industrialisation in the field of Chinese medical sciences. The agreement also hopes to provide support to the SAR government’s strategy to promote the industrialisation of Chinese medical technologies as well as China’s strategy in technology and innovation.
