With the advent of the new academic year, the University of Macau (UM) is welcoming 50 outstanding faculty members and researchers from around the world, seven of whom joined UM through the UM Macao Fellow Programme.

Over the years, UM has developed an outstanding faculty team by recruiting top scholars from around the world. Many of the new academic staff who joined UM this year come from world-renowned universities, including Harvard University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Michigan, Peking University, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Manchester, the University of Bath, Queen’s University, the University of York, the University of Birmingham, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Coimbra, and the University of California.

Many of the faculty members at UM have earned prestigious titles, including fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Society for Metals, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, fellow of the American Physical Society, fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, fellow of the American Educational Research Association, president of the IEEE’s Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society, fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor (Ministry of Education).

In order to nurture young scholars from Macao and encourage qualified local talent to pursue career development in Macao, UM launched the UM Macao Fellow Programme in 2015 for permanent residents from reputable universities with a master’s or PhD degree to further develop their career. The programme offers a three-year contract to successful applicants. Besides engaging in research at UM, successful applicants will have the opportunity to work at reputable universities or institutions outside Macao as visiting scholars or researchers to enrich their teaching and research experience, broaden their horizons, and enhance their professional knowledge.

In the future, UM will redouble its efforts to recruit high-calibre scholars in order to develop a faculty team with international academic influence. It will also continue to create attractive working conditions for faculty members to help them achieve their full potential and explore the frontiers of their respective fields.

In addition, UM today (29 August) held the Welcome Reception and Orientation for Academic Staff for the newcomers.
