The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum 2018 kicked off at Sun Yat-sen University on 9 July. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Opportunity and Mission’. University presidents, experts, and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao attended the event to discuss issues related to higher education.

Participants included UM Rector Yonghua Song, Sun Yat-sen University President Luo Jun, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Vice Chancellor and President Rocky Tuan, and representatives from other organisations. During the meeting, participants discussed collaborations in scientific research, and the establishment of new professional alliances and state-key laboratories. All parties agreed that the successful development of the alliance depends on continuous communication, collaboration, and resource sharing, as well as meeting the needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and aligning itself with China’s growth strategies. Rector Song chaired a session on how to increase collaboration in technological innovation among higher education institutions in Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong so as to promote the development of the Greater Bay Area. Established by UM, Sun Yat-sen University, and CUHK in November 2016, the alliance now consists of 28 universities.
