Prof Mak Pui In from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), who is also the associate director (research) of UM’s State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, has been appointed associate editor of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC), the top scientific journal in the field of electronics. Prof Mak is the only academic from China to be appointed to this position.

The other three people from Asia who have been appointed to this position are from South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, respectively. Most of the other associate editors come from the United States, with the rest from Europe. The JSSC is a peer-reviewed monthly journal that reports the latest research studies on solid-state circuits. Published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in New York City with an impact factor of 4.181, it is one of the most reputed journals in the field of computer hardware design, covering topics such as circuits modelling, technology, systems design, layout, and testing that are directly related to IC design. The journal’s review process—carried out by diverse generations of engineers and academicians over five decades—has consistently upheld certain criteria in judging the quality of the submitted papers, thus defining a uniquely high bar for publication.

Prof Mak is a native of Macao, who is recognised internationally as a leading scholar in the field of solid-state circuits, with 17 papers (chips) presented at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) from 2011 to 2018. This is more than the total number of papers presented by mainland universities at the conference during the same period, which is 16. Prof Mak is currently also the associate editor of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Letters, a member of the Technical Programme Committee of ISSCC, and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society.
