Prof Rui Martins, vice rector of the University of Macau (UM), recently attended the Board of Administrators meeting of the Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities (AULP), on behalf of UM. Held on 28 February in the AULP’s headquarters in Lisbon, the meeting attracted representatives from ten higher education institutions from Portuguese-speaking countries and Macao, which serve as the president of the AULP or members of the Board of Administrators, Board of Supervisors, and Secretariat General.

This year’s meeting was chaired by the representative from Mandume Ya Ndemufayo University, which is the president of the AULP. Participants discussed the headquarters’ activities in the past six months as well as matters related to the preparation for the 28th annual meeting of the AULP, which will be held from 18 July to 20 July, 2018, in Lubango, Angola. Registration for the meeting is now open. 

Other main items on the meeting’s agenda included: launching the 2018 Fernão Mendes Pinto Award (deadline for application is 31 July 2018), releasing the minutes of the 27th annual meeting of the AULP, and publishing RILP (Issue 31/32, 2017, and Issue 33/34 2018). At the meeting, Gustavo Velloso from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, received the 2017 Fernão Mendes Pinto Award.

Participants also discussed the Fortaleza Declaration passed in 2004, the credit hour system proposed at the AULP’s 27th annual meeting held in Campinas, Brazil, and the experience of their respective countries in academic exchange. They also proposed establishing a platform for Erasmus – AULP. The Board of Administrators made a master plan for the project at the meeting.

Consisting of over 140 universities and other research and educational institutions from CPLP countries and Macao, the AULP takes as its mission to promote communication among its members as well as the development of education and the Portuguese language worldwide. UM served as the president of the AULP from 2014 to 2017.
