The University of Macau (UM) English Debating Team yesterday (23 May) won the championship at the 20th FLTRP Cup National English Debating Competition. Two debaters of the UM team, namely Choy Man Kei and Lam Pek Kei, were ranked No 1 and No 3, respectively, among all the debaters in the competition. The team also won a championship in this competition in 2009.

The FLTRP Caup National English Debating Competition is the largest and most influential English debating competition in China. This year’s event attracted 120 debating teams from 500 universities in China, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Zhejiang University, and China Foreign Affairs University.

After placing first in the eight rounds of preliminaries, the UM team proceeded to the final and eventually won the championship in the grand final. Other debating teams in the final came from Peking University, the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Beijing Normal University.

Members of the UM team included Choy Man Kei, a master’s student from the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS); and Lam Pek Kei, a fourth-year student from the FSS. Their coach was Nicole Ng.
