The University of Macau (UM) on 23 May will confer the Doctor of Science honoris causa degree on Prof Mario Capecchi, a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in recognition of his contributions to the field of genetic research. Following the honorary degree conferment ceremony, Prof Capecchi will present a Doctor honoris causa Lecture, titled ‘Gene Targeting Into the 21st Century: Mouse Models of Human Diseases from Cancer to Neuropsychiatric Disorders’. During the talk, Prof Capecchi will discuss the development of gene targeting and how the technique can be used to prevent and treat cancer and neuropsychiatric disorders. All are welcome.

Prof Capecchi received his PhD degree in biophysics from Harvard University in 1967. He has won numerous awards, including the Pezcoller Foundation-AACR International Award for Cancer Research, and the March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology. Prof Capecchi is best known for his pioneering work on the development of gene targeting in mouse embryo-derived stem (ES) cells. This technique allows scientists to evaluate in detail the function of any gene during the developmental or post-developmental phase of a mouse. In 2007, Prof Capecchi shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this discovery.

The talk will start on Monday 23 May at the Banquet Hall in the UM Guest House. It will be conducted in English. For registration, please visithttps://isw.um.edu.mo/evm/register/msbs2016reg. For enquiries, please call 8822 4228/ 8822 4998 or email to fhs@um.edu.mo.

In addition, Prof Mario Capecchi will participate in the Third Macao Symposium on Biomedical Sciences, which is organised by UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences. During the event, he will discuss the new advances in biomedical sciences and the future trends with scientists from around the world. For more information, please visithttp://msbs2016.fhs.umac.mo.
