Prof Mao Haijian and Prof Li Ping from the Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau (UM), recently won a second award in the monograph category and a second award in the paper category, respectively, at the Ministry of Education’s Seventh Award for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of Higher Education Institutions (The Humanities and Social Sciences) [English translation of the award name].

Published in 2011, Prof Mao’s award-winning book is based on solid research and a comprehensive study of the Hundred Days’ Reform in China in late Qing dynasty. The book also won a first prize in the monograph category at an award for outstanding research achievements in philosophy and social sciences organised by Shanghai city.

Prof Li’s award-winning paper explores the development of the Yellow Emperor’s identity over the course of the Chinese history. The paper was published in 2012 by Social Sciences in China.

This year 908 out of more than 6,000 submissions were awarded (50 first prizes, 251 second prizes, 596 third prizes, and 11 awards for knowledge popularisation). The triennial award was established by the Ministry of Education in 1995, with the aim of rewarding outstanding research in the fields of philosophy and social sciences.

Another book by Prof Mao, which is a study of the Opium War, has received the Simian Originality Award. The English version of the book is scheduled to be published next year by the Cambridge University Press. The Simian Originality Award was established by the East China Normal University in commemoration of the late Prof Lv Simian, an eminent historian in China.
