To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the University of Macau and the 10th anniversary of Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering (INESC Macau), the University, INESC Macau and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of Macau (IEEE Macau Section) invited Prof. Vladimiro Henrique Barrosa Pinto de Miranda, IEEE Fellow and Professor of Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), to present a Distinguished Lecture of “Training Mappers with Entropy Concepts – a Revolution in Developing Models and Adaptive Intelligent Systems” on 19 October 2006 at 3:30 p.m. at Luso-Chinese Building 105 (L-105) of the University of Macau.

Prof. Miranda, IEEE Fellow and Professor of Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, is currently the Director of Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores do Porto (INESC Porto) and the Honorary Consultant of INESC Macau. He was the consultant of Innovation Agency S.A. to provide consultancy service on projects under the EUREKA framework. Mainly, Prof. Miranda is involved into the research of planning & scheduling of power system and its stability analysis, also research the application of intelligent technology in power system. In 1996 – 1997, he was the Full Professor of Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau and the first President of Board of Directors of INESC Macau. He had more than 200 publications and most of them were published in main international review and conferences with selection by referees. Until now, he has supervised 13 PhD and 17 MSc. students. There are 1 PhD and 2 MSc. students under his supervising in the Faculty now.

The presentation will discuss a new criterion and procedure to develop mappers like neural networks or fuzzy inference systems, based on Renyi’s Entropy combined with Parzen windows (an approach named Information Theoretic Learning). Application examples will be presented, namely to wind power prediction. As a method to provide training for fuzzy or neural systems, the application of EPSO – Evolutionary Particle Swarm Optimization will be discussed using Entropy as its objective function. All are welcome to join the captioned lecture on time.

The University of Macau, INESC Macau and IEEE Macau Section focused on the development of science and technology in Macau, such as improving the scientific and technological level of local I.T. staffs, researchers and developers. Besides commemorating the 25th anniversary of the University and the 10th anniversary of INESC Macau, the Distinguished Lecture is also for ideas and technology exchange between I.T. experts of Portugal and the locals.
