The English Department of the University of Macau is pleased to host a lecture by the internationally recognized poet and novelist Shirley Geok-lin Lim. Professor Lim will deliver a talk to undergraduates and the university community entitled “Writing Between Childhood and Identity: Asian Selves and Post/Colonial Imaginaries” at 11:00 a.m. in room L105 of the Luso-Chinese Building on the University of Macau campus this Thursday (20th). The talk, which is open to the public, will address issues of children’s literature in a colonial historical context, how a former colonial language like English might express imagination and mediate identity in an Asian context. In addition, Professor Lim will read from her forthcoming young adult novel, Princess Shawl.

Shirley Lim is Professor of English and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She was formerly Chair Professor of English and Head of the English Department at the University of Hong Kong. Her first book of poems, Crossing The Peninsula (Heinemann Press, 1980), won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize and her memoir, Among The White Moon Faces: An Asian-American Memoir of Homelands (Feminist Press, 1997), received the American Book Award. She is the author of two novels Joss and Gold (2001) and Sister Swing (2006). Professor Lim, in addition to being an important American writer, is a lively and engaging speaker.

The talk is in English and all interested parties are welcome.
