Wong Ka In, a PhD student of the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), received the Young Researcher Award 2014 from the International Institute of Macau, for his research project, “Design, Calibration and Control of a Variable Dual-fuel Automotive Engine Using Computational Intelligence Approaches”.

Wong Ka In’s supervisor is FST Associate Dean Prof Wong Pak Kin. The awarded project will be part of Wong Ka In’s PhD thesis, in which two new computational intelligence approaches are proposed and applied to the design, calibration and control of a variable dual-fuel automotive engine system. The designed engine system and controller not only can help engine manufacturers to save a large amount of development time and money in tuning up the engines, but more importantly, can significantly reduce the amount of fossil fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Established in 2002, the Young Researcher Award aims to promote scientific research in areas of interest to the local community and to reward research projects developed by students and researchers from local higher education institutions.
