Venue : STDM Auditorium, University of Macau Library
Content : Speaker : Mr. Philip Yeung, English editor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Columnist at the South China Morning Post on English language teaching and learning and other educational issues Many lament the decline of the standard of English in Hong Kong in recent years. Some blame it on the government’s mother-tongue teaching policy. But Mr Philip Yeung believes that the wrong kind of English has been taught, and the wrong approach has been used in teaching students in mass education. A radically new approach is called for. Chinese is largely a grammarless language. Getting students trapped in a web of grammar rules defies the psychology of learning, leaving students disengaged and helpless. He advocates the teaching of Empowerment English which is based on a step-by-step pattern recognition approach. It is fun and functional and highly interactive.
Language : English or Chinese
