“Collective Memories—Sculptural Representations of the Historical Figures in Macau” co-organized by the University of Macau (UM) and Macau Foundation will open in UM next Monday (14 September) in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Macao SAR. This is the first exhibition to represent the folk customs and famous historical figures in Macao from the 16th Century through the 20th Century with the traditional Chinese folk art “clay figure”. It is also the start of a series of clay sculpture exhibitions that aim to represent Macao’s history, culture and famous figures.

The 5th-generation descendant of the famous folk artist “Clay Figure Zhang”, Prof. Zhang Zexun has inherited the artistic talent of her ancestors and has garnered extensive knowledge of the art history. She not only follows in her father’s footsteps in clay figure creation, but has also brought the clay sculpting art to a whole new level through constant innovation. In the early 1990s, her works were included in the Who’s Who of China’s Top Artists and Who’s Who of China’s Top Contemporary Folk Artists. Moreover, she and her father were named by the Chinese Television System as the top ten artists in China. Prof. Zhang joined UM in 2004 and held a clay figure and painting exhibition in UM in 2007.

The exhibition will open in the Anthony S.W. Lau Exhibition Hall at 10:00AM on 14 September and will end on 13 October. All are welcome.
