The University of Macau (UM) Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) students participated in a volunteer teaching activity in Chengmai County, Hainan province, from 10 June to 14 June. The trip aimed to raise the students’ civic awareness and encourage them to give back to society.

HFPJC students organised many activities for local students, including teaching the students about the culture of Macao, story-telling, bamboo dance, calligraphy and drawing workshops, potted plant workshops, and sharing sessions on learning experience. They used a storybook published by PJC students in the story telling session. They also gave Macao specialties and cyanotype postcards made by PJC students to the local students as gifts. At the sharing session, PJC students shared their learning experience with the local students and encouraged them to continue their studies, knowing that many children from impoverished rural areas tend to drop out of school at an early age. Both PJC students and the local children have benefitted tremendously from this volunteer teaching activity.
