Yan Zhixiang, a PhD student of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), University of Macau (UM), received the Innovator Award and the Young Scientist Excellence Award at the fourth Annual Symposium on Clinical & Pharmaceutical Solutions through Analysis (CPSA 2013), which was held in Shanghai. He was the only PhD student to receive the Innovator Award at CPSA 2013.

The CPSA symposium is an annual international conference that enjoys great renown in the field of chemical and pharmaceutical structure analysis. It attracts the participation of more than three hundred experts and scholars from well-known pharmaceutical companies, biomedical research institutes, drugs discovery contract research organisations, and higher education institutions from around the world. This year’s symposium received nearly a hundred papers from around the world, among which five were selected for the Innovator Award and six for the Young Scientist Excellence Award. Yan Zhixiang’s paper entitled “A generic multiple reaction monitoring based approach for flavonoids profiling in plants using a hybrid triple quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry” won the unanimous approval of the judges. He was the only PhD student to receive the Innovator Award at this year’s symposium. Other recipients of the Innovator Award were from Thermo, Waters, New Objective and Frontage, respectively. Yan Zhixiang’s project was supervised by assistant professor Dr. Yan Ru, and was funded by UM and the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR.

The CPSA Shanghai Symposium and roundtables are highly interactive events where scientists share their experience and visions in a collegial setting. The programme highlights speakers and sessions that provide real-world experiences with new technologies and critical insights into current issues and future needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The conference also aims to provide a platform for young scientists and students in the area of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics to showcase their creativity and share their research findings.
