At the 2012 International Conference on the Systems, Man, and Cybernetics 2012 (IEEE SMC 2012), a paper by Jing WANG, a PhD student of the Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), won a Best Student Paper Award, for its contribution in providing a novel fuzzy neural network model and typical conjugate gradients training method for the Fuzzy Neural Networks.

IEEE SMC 2012 has held from 14 October to 17 October in Seoul, South Korea. More than 580 papers from around the world were presented at the conference. The paper entitled, “On the Conjugate Gradients (CG) Training Algorithm of Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNNs) via Its Equivalent Fully Connected Neural Networks (FFNNs)”, co-authored by Jing WANG, Prof. C.L.Philip CHEN, Dean of FST, and Prof. Chi-Hsu WANG from Chiao Tung University of Taiwan, was selected as one of the best student papers.

At the conference, only six papers were selected as the best student papers and they were from the Chung Hsing University of Taiwan, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Hebei University, Purdue University and UM. The conference aimed to provide a forum for scientists, engineers, and practitioners from all over the world to present the latest design concepts, research results, developments, and applications, as well as to exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems engineering, human-machine systems, and emerging cybernetics. IEEE SMC 2013 will be held in Manchester, the United Kingdom.
