This year over 1,500 students join the big family of the University of Macau

“Try to be one good person, learn from at least two good teachers, and make at least three good friends,” are the hopes expressed by University of Macau (UM) Rector Wei Zhao in his welcome speech to over 1,500 first-year students of the new academic year who are about to embark on a new journey of their life. This is the first year UM has welcomed new students with the UM Anthem. Apart from the “one, two, three”, Rector Wei Zhao also encouraged students to nurture the five virtues, namely humanity, integrity, propriety, wisdom and sincerity, which are also UM’s motto, and work hard to become professionals with creativity, a strong sense of civic duty, as well as the ability to adapt to the fast-changing world.

There is an old saying that, “A good beginning is half the battle.” This is perhaps the best description of this year’s Freshman Discovery Programme, which is special compared to previous years because this year’s Freshman Discovery Programme opened with new students singing the UM Anthem in unison. As the beautiful song reverberated throughout the campus, a special bond already formed among the students before they even had a chance to introduce themselves to each other. Varied as their backgrounds are, from now on they will all be a part of the big family of UM.

During his meeting with the students, Rector Wei Zhao praised the students as “the best of the best”. He also expressed his hope that the students can realize well-rounded development by making full use of the good facilities, academic programmes and environment provided by UM. He conveyed three expectations for students: try to be a good person following the five virtues, learn from at least two good teachers both inside and outside of class, and make at least three good friends because everyone needs the help and companionship of good friends to enjoy a truly successful and fulfilling life. He also encouraged the students to broaden their perspectives to beyond the campus and become truly qualified “world citizens”. In closing, Rector Wei Zhao wished the students a fruitful life during their four years of study at UM and hoped they can benefit from the good learning environment and the unique “4-in-1” pedagogical model that consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education.
