In 2011, upon approval by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the University of Macau (UM) became the first non-mainland university to be allowed to directly recruit top mainland students for postgraduate studies through its Postgraduate Recommended Direct Admission Scheme. The Ministry of Education only allows about three hundred renowned universities in the mainland to make direct recommendations for a certain percentage of their top undergraduate students for admission to postgraduate programmes every year. This way of recruiting students, known as the “early admission” at UM, has enabled the university to recruit more outstanding postgraduate students from mainland China.

To make full use of this opportunity, UM’s Graduate School has been working very closely with the Global Affairs Office and all academic units to diligently promote the postgraduate programmes in mainland China. The first stage of promotional activities for early admission was launched in September 2011. A series of admission information sessions were held in various cities, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Lanzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai. During the trip to Xi’an, UM Rector Wei Zhao gave a very interesting and insightful speech titled, “A Macao Person’s Answer to the Qian Xuesen Question”. Mr. Qian Xuesen was a very famous rocket scientist who was considered the “father of China's missile and space technology programme”. Qian was quoted as saying that he repeatedly asked why Chinese universities failed to produce truly outstanding graduates. Rector Wei Zhao said that Prof. Chung Laung Liu, a famous computer scientist from Macao, has already answered this question, because one of Prof. Liu’s students Prof. Chi-Chih Yao received the Turing Award, the most prestigious award in computer science, in 2000, which shows that Macao is capable of nurturing outstanding talent.

The second stage of promotion was held in May 2012, in Chengdu, where UM representatives met with heads and students from four universities. A trip to Wuhan is being planned for later this summer.

For the 2012/2013 academic year, UM cooperated with one hundred mainland universities eligible to make direct admission recommendations, and recruited eighty-four outstanding master’s students through this scheme. For the 2013/2014 academic year, the application period for early admission is from 16 July 2012 to 5 October 2012; and the number of target universities increased from 100 to 114.
