University of Macau (UM) students’ project, “iINTERACT – Study of Eye Tracking Technologies and Its Applications”, became the apple of the judges’ eye at the Amway Cup 2012 University IT Project Competition, and took home the Gold and Creativity Prizes.

The project is a video-based eye-tracking system that monitors and captures the details of the fast movement of the subject’s pupil. The system employs an inexpensive solution by using a conventional digital video camera to keep track of the eye’s movement and deal with human-computer interactions. It allows users to play computer games, input texts and draw pictures with eye control instead of using a keyboard and a mouse. In addition, the gaze motion can be analyzed and displayed in the form of gaze plot and heat map. The system not only can help people with disabilities to communicate with their eyes, but also can benefit professional investigations and system development.

The Amway Cup University IT Project Competition is considered an influential annual event by the education and IT sectors in China. This year, the competition attracted a total of 340 projects from about two hundred universities from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, as well as thirteen provinces from mainland China. Four Gold Prize, eight Silver Prizes, one Creativity Prize and one Practicality Prize were awarded. “iINTERACT – Study of Eye Tracking Technologies and Its Applications” is by UM students Wendy Lei I Kei and Jacky Wong Wong from the Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, and their supervisors are Dr. Derek Wong Fai and Dr. Lidia Chao Sam.
