University of Macau Rector Wei Zhao delivers a welcome speech

The University of Macau (UM) is organizing a “Student Development Activity Series” with the theme of “Whole Person Education in Character and Expertise”. The Macau Student Affairs Institute today held an opening ceremony for its advanced course in student affairs, which is an important part of the activity series. The course will be taught by more than ten experts and academics from the United States, Taiwan and mainland China, etc.

UM Rector Wei Zhao said that the development of higher education institutions (HE institutions) is putting higher demands on student affairs-related work, and the course aims to further improve the participants’ theoretical knowledge and upgrade their practical skills. Wei Zhao said he believes the course will play a significant role in helping HE institutions to become world-class universities. He added that the course is unprecedented in Asia both in scale and in level, and will be conducted through intensive teaching and systematic training, in order to train high-quality student affairs professionals for Macao and neighboring countries and regions so they can make greater contributions to the growth of their respective universities.

The ten-day course will combine theory and practice, and will cover such topics as the functions and duties of university student affairs (job requirements, skills and code of ethics), theory and secrets concerning student development paths, campus culture and students nurturing, basic skills and education theories about student affairs, design of quality activities (the role and organization of quality activities), guidance on the management of residential colleges and student organizations, formulation of residential college student development plans, and on so. A total of fifty-nine student affairs staff from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Lanzhou University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Tongji University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, National Taiwan University, and UM were selected from a large and diverse pool of candidates to participate in the course.

The opening ceremony was held at UM’s University Library. Attending guests included Zhang Xiaoguang, deputy director of the Department of Education and Culture, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao SAR; Lo Lai Peng, functional chief (higher education affairs) of the Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao SAR; Gregory S. Blimling, vice president for student affairs of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Gwen Dungy, executive director of NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education; Tse Chi Wai, chair of UM’s University Council; Wei Zhao, rector of UM; Simon Ho, vice rector (academic affairs) of UM; Fan Xitao, dean of UM’s Faculty of Education.
