Prof. Ayala shares his opinions on science and religion

Master’s Teas are a time-honoured tradition of residential colleges at world-renowned universities. Master's Teas provide opportunities for students to have intimate interactions with distinguished visitors in a relaxed, informal setting. Invited visitors come from a range of backgrounds and fields, such as politics, sports, the arts, the media, academics, and business. Recently, the East Asia College invited Prof Francsico J. Ayala, recipient of this year’s title of Doctor of Science honoris causa from UM, as the guest of Master’s Teas.

Prof. Ayala, recipient of the 2001 National Medal of Science (U.S.), world-renowned biologist, and author of several famous books discussing the relationship between science and religion, joined the EAC Master's Tea on 6 November 2011 as the guest of honor. Prof. Ayala first shared his opinions on science and religion, and then answered questions from the students. Students were all so eager to ask questions that EAC Head Prof. Iu Vai Pan had to prolong the discussion session. The atmosphere throughout the discussion was very happy. After the discussion, Prof. Ayala and the participating students enjoyed a lunch together.

Participants considered the activity to be deeply meaningful, saying that they felt really excited and inspired to talk to a world-renowned scholar face-to-face, and to learn from his wisdom and life experiences.
