Recently students from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), won the second prize at the eighth National Postgraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (NPMCM), which was held in September 2011. A total of 2,245 teams from 242 universities and national research institutes participated in this contest. NPMCM is a science and technology contest co-sponsored by some universities in China. The contest aims to improve postgraduates’ ability to use mathematical models and computers to solve practical problems. It also hopes to broaden the participants’ knowledge, stimulate creativity, foster team spirit, advance the reform of postgraduate education, and enhance exchanges and cooperation among universities.

During the contest, each team was required to write a thesis consisting of assumption of the model, establishment, calculation, result analysis, testing and improvement of the model.

This is the first time for UM’s FST to participate in NPMCM. Prize-winning students include Lv Shulin, Zhao Hailin, Shu Hongwu and Wang Zhibo from the Department of Mathematics, as well as Wang Longyue and Han Lifeng from the Department of Computer and Information Science.
