Mr. Li Shang, a PhD student in Biomedical Science, of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) at the University of Macau (UM), won the First Prize Award for his paper entitled “The Pro-angiogenesis Effect of Calycosin”, at the Biomedical Science PhD Forum held on 22 September 2011, which was part of the 13th annual conference of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). The 13th annual conference of CAST was co-organized by CAST and the municipal government of Tianjin city, and brought together more than two thousand and four hundred people, including numerous Nobel Prize laureates, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and experts and scholars from the UK and the US.

The forum received many papers from around the country, among which thirty were selected for oral presentation and three received the First Prize Award. Mr. Li’s paper, entitled “The Pro-angiogenesis Effect of Calycosin”, won the unanimous approval of the judges and received the First Prize Award. Mr. Li’s project is supervised by Prof. Lee Ming Yuen and funded by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund.

The forum revolved around major hot issues that are at the cutting edge of biomedical science. It aimed to provide a platform for Chinese PhD students specializing in biomedical science to showcase their creativity and share their research findings.
