The Institution of Mechanical Engineers Student Chapter of University of Macau Student Union (IMechE-UMSU) was formally inaugurated on 11 September 2011 at the STDM Auditorium in the Library of the University of Macau (UM). Chairman of the IMechE Hong Kong Branch Mr. Chow Wai Keung, Chairman of the China Development Sub-committee Mr. Louis Szeto, Chairman of the Young Member Section of the IMechE Hong Kong Branch Mr. Howard Tong, Head of the Department of Electromechanical Engineering (EME) of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at UM Prof. Wong Pak Kin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for the Development Quality, Macau (IDQ), Prof. Tam Lap Mou, and Assistant Professor of EME Dr. Wong Seng Fat were invited to the inauguration ceremony.

The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Chow. Prof. Wong, Dr. Wong and Prof. Tam presented the souvenirs to the representatives of the IMechE Hong Kong Branch, the Hong Kong Young Member Chapter, and the China Development Sub-committee. Afterwards, the association’s first group of officers for the year 2011 was sworn in by Mr. Chow. Mr. Chow emphasized that IMechE would give full support to young engineers and would help them in their future careers; he also encouraged IMechE students to participate actively in activities held by IMechE and grasp the opportunities to broaden their horizons and enrich their knowledge. Mr. Chow also introduced the history of IMechE as well as the structure of the IMechE Hong Kong Branch.

During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Wong and Mr. Errol Kuan Hong Cheng, president of IMechE-UMSU, each delivered an inauguration speech. Prof. Wong mentioned that the establishment of IMechE-UMSU will offer good learning opportunities for EME students as well as meaningful extracurricular activities geared toward professional training. Mr. Kuan, speaking as the representative of the members of the association, expressed that he and his fellow members will value this opportunity and work hard to develop the association.
