Since the establishment of the Research Committee in 1993, the University of Macau (UM) has been developing in the areas of research. Published in hundreds of international refereed journals, the research achievements of UM in various scientific and technological domains have reached international level, producing world-class, award-winning papers.
Conducting research for the advancement of knowledge and in support of teaching, UM has actively developed cooperation with scientific research institutions home and abroad: the Science and Technology Development Fund, Macao Foundation, the Science and Technology Foundation of Portugal, European Union, Harvard University, Cambridge University and many more. Expanding excellent research human resources, UM aims to provide opportunities of higher learning at an international standard, producing all-round graduates with the potential to become pillars of the Macao Special Administrative Region as well as serving in the Mainland and in the global community.
From Chinese Medical Sciences to Gaming Management, Criminology; from Microelectronics, Information Science to Linguistics, Chinese Foreign Relations - just to name a few. The University is heading towards achieving research excellence in a period of 5 years (2008-2012) with the full support from the Research Committee. High quality research will advance the scholarship of academic staff, attracting eminent professors to join UM, a factor which, in turn, underpins the quality of teaching. UM firmly believes that the transmission of knowledge (teaching) and the creation of knowledge (research and scholarly work) are inseparable functions of academics in a university setting. Quality academics have the capability to transform teaching into an inspiring and motivating activity for their students. Therefore all academics from lecturers to professors are stimulated to carry out regular research and scholarly activities in addition to their teaching duties. Only through emphasis on both teaching and research can a university nurture talent, create knowledge, and contribute to the community, and teaching along with research is exactly the core mission of UM.
