Honourable Mr. Ho Hau Wah, Chief Executive of Macao SAR and Chancellor of the University of Macau,
Honourable Dr. Tse Chi Wai, Chairman of the University Council,
Distinguished Guests, Faculty, Parents and Students,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you for coming. We gather here to celebrate an important moment in the history of the University - the inauguration of our Honours College.

This moment is particularly exciting as this year is the 10th anniversary of the Macao's return to the People's Republic of China. In the last 10 years, under the leadership of the SAR government, Macao has made tremendous progress in social and economic development. Macao has now proudly become one of the fastest growing regions in the world. However, this is just a beginning! Macao people are determined to develop a harmonious and prosperous society with properly diversified economy and long-term growth stability. To achieve this objective, it is critical to educate young generation and cultivate their talents.

The University of Macau is the University for Macao and Macao people. We are committed to nurture the next-generation leaders for Macao, China and beyond. Hence, we take pride in establishing our Honours College. The Honours College is designed for students who not only strive for excellence in academic disciplines but also appreciate global, dynamic, and stimulating experiences beyond the classrooms. It is also designed for those who are motivated to serve the community and are committed to lead the society. In one word, the University of Macau's Honours College is designed for our new generation of leaders!

To establish an Honours College with this great mission has been an effort of many. We particularly appreciate the leadership of Mr. Ho Hau Wah, the Chief Executive of Macao SAR and Chancellor of the University. We are also grateful for the support of Dr. Tse, the Chairman of the University Council and its members. We should also applaud Dean Mok and many academic and administrative staff members. They have done a fantastic job in preparing the establishment of the Honours College.

Finally, let me introduce to you our very first group of students recruited for our Honours College. Ladies and gentlemen, these 41 very bright young people were selected from hundreds of applicants among our five faculties through a rigorous evaluation and assessment process. We found these young women and men exceptionally devoted to exploration and discovery. They are willing to work extra hard to exploit their full potentials and be ready for serving Macao, China and the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us give these young and determined students warm applause, wishing them success in their voyage!

Thank you.
