The University of Macau (UM) today (24 August) held the first lecture of the UM Lecture Series in the new academic year. Prof Tony Chan, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, gave a talk titled ‘From A Kung Ngam to Clear Water Bay: My Life Journey’. The talk attracted a full-house audience of UM faculty members, students, and members of the general public.

Prof Chan also encouraged students to learn more about different cultures and history, expand their horizons, and strive for well-rounded development.

Prof Chan is a renowned mathematician and has been serving as HKUST president since 2009. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he studied in the United States and has served in teaching, research, and senior management positions at leading institutions in the US, including Yale University, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the National Science Foundation.
