The fifth module of the Global Leadership Development Programme, co-organised by the University of Macau (UM) Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management (APAEM) and Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), was held in Kyushu and Nagasaki, Japan, recently. With assistance from Kyushu Economic Forum and the Kyushu Association of Independent Entrepreneurs (AIE Kyushu), the module attracted more than 60 senior executives from various industries in mainland China, Macao, and Japan.
The opening ceremony took place at Nagasaki International University and was chaired by Prof Shigemi Furuta, programme director of the APAEM. Officiating guests at the ceremony included Dr Jonathan Choi, chairman of the Hong Kong-based Sunwah Group and member of the UM University Council; Prof Jacky So, dean of the FBA and director of the APAEM; Houdou Nakamura, governor of the Nagasaki Prefecture government; Norio Tomonaga, mayor of the city of Sasebo; Susumu Ishihahra, chairman of the Kyushu Tourism Promotion Council; Akinori Kobayakawa, chairman of AIE Kyushu; and Naoki Abe, chancellor of the Nagasaki International University. This module was focused on the current developments of integrated resorts in Japan and shared Macao’s experience and practices in this area, with the aim of nurturing globally competitive and socially responsible senior executives for the industry.
The core theme of this module was ‘Strategy, Growth and Responsible Gaming in Kyushu Integrated Resort’. The three-day module comprised seven seminars and a group presentation. Speakers in the module included scholars and industry leaders from Macao and Japan. During the event, Prof Jacky So, Prof Desmond Lam and Prof Glenn McCartney from UM conducted seminars covering a variety of related topics, including ‘Revenue Management’, ‘Convention and Hospitality, Event Entertainment Management and Branding’, ‘Strategic Management’, and ‘Responsible Gaming’. Participants were also invited to visit Huis Ten Bosch, a potential site for a new integrated resort project in Japan.
Every year, the APAEM organises a variety of executive development programmes. The previous four modules were focused on hospitality and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, and exhibitions), and were held in Macao, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Singapore, and Seoul, respectively. The academy plans to hold its sixth module in Macao from 29 November to 3 December, with the theme being ‘Contextual Mindset in Integrated Resort’.
