The launch ceremony for the first Brighter Future Student Awards will be held at the University of Macau (UM) on Wednesday 8 November. The event is co-organised by a local law firm, MdME Lawyers, and its international network in Portuguese-speaking countries, MLGTS Legal Circle (with offices in Portugal, Angola and Mozambique), UM’s Student Affairs Office, and the Faculty of Law Students’ Association of University of Macau Students’ Union. This award programme will be open for applications on the same day. All university students in Macao majoring in law or other disciplines related to law are eligible to apply.

‘The purpose of creating these awards is to promote legal studies in order to improve students’ knowledge in the laws of Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries, and also to foster greater participation of students in community affairs,’ says Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, a partner of MdME Lawyers. ‘Another purpose is to contribute to the policy objectives of China and the Macao SAR governments to develop our region into a platform for investments from the Portuguese-speaking countries, to which MdME and the MLGTS Legal Circle are strongly committed.’

The Brighter Future Student Awards come in two categories: laws in Macao, and laws in Portuguese-speaking countries, with one winner for each category. The winner in each category will have the chance to visit and intern for one month in the leading Portuguese law firm, Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados, as well as to participate in a Portuguese language course. Flight tickets, accommodation, and food allowance during the internship period will be included. Students who are ranked second in each category will receive a one-month internship opportunity in Macao at MdME Lawyers and a symbolic monetary prize.

Those who are interested in this competition are welcome to attend the launch ceremony to be held on Wednesday 8 November at 2:30pm in the theatre of Student Activity Centre (E31), UM. For enquiries, please call 8822 4640 or email to umsu.fllsa@um.edu.mo.
