The University of Macau (UM) will hold an honorary doctoral degrees conferment ceremony at the Tap Seac Multi-Sports Pavilion at 15:00 on 7 November, 2009. At the ceremony UM will confer honorary doctoral degrees upon three distinguished scholars, namely Prof. Gu Mingyuan, Prof. Tu Weiming, and Dr. Wang Meng, in recognition of their outstanding achievements and significant contributions in the educational, philosophical and literary fields. Mr. Edmund Ho, Chief Executive of Macao SAR and UM’s Chancellor, will preside at the ceremony.

Yesterday (20th) UM held a press conference to provide detailed information on honorary doctoral degrees conferment ceremonies and talks by honorary degree recipients for the year 2009. At the press conference Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) Prof. Simon Ho noted that UM confers on a yearly basis honorary doctoral degrees upon individuals with outstanding achievements in various fields in recognition of their contributions to the society. This year UM has conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon four distinguished individuals, namely Mr. George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st President of the United States, Prof. Gu Mingyuan, a distinguished educator, Prof. Tu Weiming, an important contemporary figure of Confucianism, and Dr. Wang Meng, former Minister of the Ministry of Culture and renowned contemporary writer whose works have widespread influence.

In order to save the elderly Mr. Bush the trouble of going all the way from the US to Macao to receive the honorary degree, UM’s University Council Chair Dr. Daniel Tse, University Council Treasurer Mr. Wong Chong Fat, and Rector Wei Zhao went to the US in this April to present the degree to him. A video documenting the conferment ceremony was played at the press conference.

UM Registrar Paul Pang says that UM will soon hold four talks by the recipients of honorary doctoral degrees, including the Seminar of the Study on Wang Meng’s Works scheduled for 6 Nov. at 9:30 at STDM Auditorium in the University Library, talk by Dr. Wang Meng “The Way of Literature” scheduled for 6 Nov. at 17:00 at UM’s Cultural Centre, and talk by Prof. Gu Mingyuan “Educational Development of the Mainland in the Past Three Decades” scheduled for 6 Nov. at 19:00 at the Confucius Conference Hall, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau. Prof. Tu Weiming is also going to give a talk “Philosophy, Ethics, Religion: Dialogue of Civilizations and Innovation of Confucianism”.

UM Congregation 2009 will be a part of the honorary doctoral degree conferment ceremony scheduled for 7 Nov.
