The University of Macau’s (UM) summer programmes and summer camps have been quite popular among international students and secondary school students in Macao. This year, the university continues to organise summer programmes and camps of different themes, including science popularisation, biomedical sciences, English, and Portuguese, to help students discover their talents and interests.

UM’s various English summer programmes and Portuguese Language Summer Programme are among the most anticipated programmes. The Department of Portuguese at UM is the largest Portuguese department outside of Portugal and Brazil and is committed to producing bilingual language professionals proficient in Chinese and Portuguese. Launched in 1986, the Portuguese Language Summer Programme has attracted students from around the world, including Japan, South Korea, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, East Timor, Ethiopia, and the United States. This year, UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities for the first time organised a series of English learning activities for students from Sacred Heart Canossian College, English Section, Kao Yip Middle School, and the Affiliated School of UM, in collaboration with the three schools. With an emphasis on interaction and practice, the activities encouraged participants to learn and use English in an immersion environment that boosted their confidence in speaking English. In addition, the FAH has also launched a summer camp titled ‘Summertime English: An Immersion Experience’ that is open to all secondary school students from Macao.

UM has also launched various activities to help new students adjust to university life and the English-speaking learning environment at UM. The activities include the Summer English Immersion Programme and a preparatory course in calculus. There are also courses in public speaking and quantitative reasoning, as well as a certificate programme in financial accounting theory, specially designed for students admitted to UM through the Principals’ Recommendation Admission Scheme.

In addition, the biomedical sciences summer camp organised by the Faculty of Health Sciences, which was launched last year, will continue to take place this year. Participants in the camp can learn more about genetics, as well as cell and molecular biology with the help of UM’s advanced lab equipment and biomedical experts. UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology also launched the Summer Camp 2017. There are six camps, namely Civil Engineering Summer Camp, Computer Vision and Human-Machine Interaction Summer Camp, Wireless Technology Study Summer Camp, Green Vehicle Summer Camp, 3D Reconstruction with Quadcopters Summer Camp, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Summer Camp. The camps aim to help participants learn more about science through interactive games and scientific experiments.
