A delegation from Temple University (TU) in the United States, led by its president Richard M Englert, recently visited the University of Macau (UM). Both parties exchanged ideas on how to increase collaboration on nurturing professionals to prepare for a ‘3+2’ programme to be jointly launched by the two universities.

The delegation was warmly received by Wei Zhao, rector of UM; Da-Hsuan Feng, director of global affairs and special advisor to the rector; and Yuen Ka Veng, registrar of UM. Rector Zhao told the guests about UM’s latest developments, academic structure, strategies for nurturing professionals, as well as academic and research achievements in recent years. During the visit, members of the delegation visited the UM Wu Yee Sun Library and Moon Chun Memorial College (MCMC) in the company of UM Librarian Paul Poon and MCMC Master Kevin Thompson, respectively. The delegation also held an information session to explain the ‘3+2’ programme and academic programmes offered by TU’s various faculties. Englert praised UM for its innovative ‘4-in-1’ model of education and rising international reputation.

According to a separate agreement with TU, starting in 2017, UM will send outstanding students selected from the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Programme, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Programme, and Bachelor of Science in Economics Programme, to TU for two years of master’s studies. Successful candidates will be automatically granted the ‘first-semester scholarship’, which is renewable. The selection process within the three departments has been completed, and the first batch of students is expected to be sent to TU this summer.
