The University of Macau has invited Professor Roy Glauber, 2005 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to give a lecture on Thursday 22 June 2006 at 4:00 pm in STDM Auditorium of the International Library of the University. The title of the lecture is “100 Years of the Light Quanta”. This lecture is part of the series of activities in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the University of Macau.

Professor Roy Glauber is Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics at Harvard University, where he received his PhD in Physics in 1949. He pioneered the quantum theory of optical coherence, which laid the foundation for the development of quantum optics. In 2005, Professor Roy Glauber was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence.

In the lecture “100 Years of the Light Quanta”, Professor Roy Glauber will speak about quantum optics. In the last one hundred years the concept of light quanta (photon) put forward by Einstein has been developed into a very large discipline, called quantum optics, which covers lasers to quantum computing, and has close relation with our daily life as well as the research frontiers of other disciplines. In the 100 years, there were many important events, which are fundamental to the development of quantum optics, and there were important scientists, whose contributions are essential.

The lecture is open to the public. All interested persons are welcome. For enquiries, please call tel. 3974335 or visit the website www.umac.mo.
