The English Debating Team of the University of Macau (UM) has successfully defeated 134 debate teams from different universities of Mainland China and won the Championship at the 13th “FLTRP CUP” National English Debating Competition held in Beijing. Leung Ching Man, team member of the UM Debating Team, was the highest scorer among all the competitors in the competition.

Hosted annually by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, organized by the Cambridge University Press and the International Debate Education Association and co-organized by the CELEA, ESU and “English Language Learning” Magazine, the “Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press Cup” (FLTRP Cup) is the highest level of competition and the most influential one in the Mainland China.

In addition to UM, participating universities also included many well-known universities in Mainland China, including Sichuan University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Nanjing University of Science & Technology, Fudan University, Central University of Finance & Economics and Tsinghua University.

The UM English Debating Team represented by Leung Ching Man and Sun Guangqin, with their excellent debating skills and intelligence, was undefeatable in the competition, from the pre-competition mock debate, qualifying rounds to final, winning all thirteen rounds in the competition. At the semi-final and final rounds, UM Debating Team won Nanjing University of Science & Technology and Nanjing Normal University, scoring 8:3 and 11:2 respectively and became the final champion of the competition.

On winning the 13th “FLTRP CUP” National English Debating Competition, the next debating competition that UM English Debating Team participates will be the World University Debating Championship, to be held in Turkey in late December 2009.
