Five Macao secondary school students represented Macao at the 44th International Physics Olympiad, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 7 July to 15 July, and won five medals, including one silver medal, two bronze medals, and two Honourable Mentions, the best results Macao has ever achieved at this competition. The team was led by Dr. Chan Iat Neng from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), who also provided training for the five students. 80 countries and regions participated in this year’s competition, and the Macao team ranked alongside teams from advanced countries like the Canadian team in terms of the total number of medals.

FST’s efforts in fostering physics talent are not just limited to training students for the International Physics Olympiad. In recent years FST has been actively collaborating with the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR in organising various kinds of activities to help local secondary school students to discover their potential and to promote the advancement of science. Earlier, FST and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau co-organised the 2013 Macao Physics Competition and the Ninth Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad (Macao Region).
