Mr. Johnny Lao Keng Weng, a PhD student of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), won the championship of the postgraduate section at the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2013, with his project, “A Novel Electric Traction Railway Power Supply System Using Hybrid Parallel Power Quality Conditioner”, which received guidance from Prof. Wong Man-Chung, Dr. Dai Ningyi and Dr. Wong Chi-Kong.

An annual event organised by the Hong Kong Younger Members Section of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the competition aims to provide a platform for information exchange and to enhance the presentation skills of participating students and young engineers. More than 50 teams participated in this year’s competition, whose theme is “Inspiring Our Future”. The panel of judges was composed of professors and veteran engineers.

Johnny’s project, “A Novel Electric Traction Railway Power Supply System Using Hybrid Parallel Power Quality Conditioner”, explores how the cost of manufacturing a power quality conditioner can be reduced by reducing the operating voltage of the conditioner. It is one of the research projects conducted by the Power Electronics Laboratory, with support from the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR. The project has led to publication in two top international journals, “IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics”and“IET power Electronics, as well as a conference paper. The project has applied two patents, one is from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and another national patent is from the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is committed to fostering an international engineering and technology community, as well as to sharing and advancing knowledge, with the purpose of improving the quality of life for people. The Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition was formerly known as the Younger Members Exhibition and Conference.
