Prof. Shijian Mo, dean and chair professor of the Faculty of Law, University of Macau (UM), was elected titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL, The Hague), becoming the second scholar in Macao to have been elected titular member of IACL. The first one was Prof. Mi Jian, who is a chief advisor of the Policy Research Office of the Macao SAR government.

IACL was founded in The Hague in 1924. It is the oldest and the most influential academy of comparative law in the world. IACL is composed exclusively of highly qualified individuals working in the field of comparative law. It has approximately 700 members worldwide. Among these 700 members, approximately 100 are titular members, and the rest are associate members. New titular members are elected by a majority of two-thirds of the academy’s titular members.

Prof. Mo is the first from UM—and the second in Macao—to become a titular member of IACL. The first was Prof. Mi Jian, who is a chief advisor of the Policy Research Office of the Macao SAR government. Prof. Mo’s being elected titular member of IACL shows international recognition of his contributions and achievements in the field of comparative law.

Before joining UM, Prof. Mo worked at Deakin University (Australia), the City University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), and the China University of Political Science and Law (mainland China),. He served as the dean of the School of International Law at the China University of Political Science and Law between 2005 and 2011. He is a Chinese member of the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (2008-2013), vice president of the China Society for International Economic Law, and vice president of the China Society of International Economic and Trade Law. Prof. Mo has published 200 academic papers, books and book chapters, and has received numerous important research grants. He is also an arbitrator of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and the China Maritime Arbitration Commission.
