Two books, Generalized Low-Voltage Circuit Techniques for Very High-Speed Time-Interleaved Analog-to-Digital Converters and High-/Mixed-Voltage Analog and RF Circuit Techniques for Nanoscale CMOS, written by University of Macau (UM) academics, have made it to the bestselling e-science book list of Springer, the world’s largest science publisher. The former has been downloaded 1,274 times ever since its launch in 2010, while the latter was downloaded 740 times in 2012 alone.

The chief authors of the two books, Prof. Elvis Mak Pui In and Dr. Terry Sin Sai Weng, both from UM’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and both being members of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI at UM, are homegrown talent through and through. They were both born and grew up in Macao, and they both received their bachelor’s, postgraduate and PhD education at UM. Learning that the fruits of their many years’ research are being downloaded twice a day worldwide on average, Prof. Mak and Dr. Sin are very pleased. “The two books represent milestones in our research,” they say. “Many of our students follow the guidance provided in the books for their research or MA and PhD studies. I hope our books can help more students in the world.”

Prof. Mak and Dr. Sin are two shining examples that testify to UM’s effort to produce outstanding scientific researchers for Macao. Prof. Mak and Dr. Sin note that despite the small size of the current campus, the university has always tried the best to provide necessary research resources which have made it possible for them to work all these years alongside Prof. Rui Martins, vice rector (research) of UM, and Prof. Ben U. They say that the excellent research environment and the guidance of both professors are the key contributors to their research achievements.

High-/Mixed-Voltage Analog and RF Circuit Techniques for Nanoscale CMOS is co-written by Prof. Mak and Prof. Rui Martins. It presents new high- and mixed-voltage RF circuit techniques from concept to practice based on studies of real design cases. Generalized Low-Voltage Circuit Techniques for Very High-Speed Time-Interleaved Analog-to-Digital Converters is co-written by Dr. Sin, Prof. Ben U and Prof. Martins. The book presents new techniques tailored for low-voltage and high-speed Switched-Capacitor (SC) ADC with various design-specific considerations and mathematical analysis.
