On 24 April, the University of Macau (UM) campus was lit up by a sea of candlelight that was hoped to convey the message to earthquake victims in Ya’an, “We’re at UM but our hearts are with you.”

Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale hit Ya’an, Sichuan province, leaving many dead and many more injured and homeless. Last night UM’s China Mainland Students’ Association and Postgraduate Association co-organised a candlelight vigil to express sorrow for the deceased as well as condolences to their families. More than 200 students, faculty members and administrative staff attended the vigil. Participants watched in tears a video of the earthquake-affected area. A student from Sichuan choked on tears while reading a memorial speech. Later participants observed a minute of silence and offered prayers for people in Ya’an. Besides the candlelight vigil, UM students and staff are organising a series of other activities, such as charity ice cream sale and fund-raising campaigns, in an attempt to help the earthquake-affected residents in Ya’an to get through this darkest moment and to rebuild their lives as soon as possible.
