The University of Macau’s (UM) Honours College (HC) students recently organized a two-day voluntary teaching trip to Guangzhou Clover Youth and Guangzhou Chunhua School, which is one of Clover Youth’s voluntary teaching stations. The voluntary teaching group, which consisted of fourteen HC students and one academic staff member, aimed to deliver to the local students the message of being grateful in everyday life.

This was the first non-local voluntary service organized by HC students. With the arrangements by Clover Youth, the group had the chance to visit the Guangzhou Chunhua School and received a warm welcome from the staff and students. During the visit to the school, the group carried out a series of specially-designed workshops, including panel discussions, lectures, role play and multimedia teaching, to arouse the interest of the students. Through the interactive teaching approach, each student had the chance to take part in each session and to speak. After the workshops, HC students gave gifts to the class.

HC students also shared their voluntary teaching experiences with representatives from the Clover Youth as well as volunteers from local high schools. The group not only gained a lot of voluntary service experiences outside Macao, but also had a better understanding of the development of voluntary work aimed at improving education in mainland China.

Participants said that although the trip was short, they have learned a lot from it. Before the trip, all the participants had made careful arrangements and detailed preparations for the teaching curriculum. And they were greatly encouraged by the local students’ positive attitude and their eagerness to pursue knowledge.
