University of Macau staff from the Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement attend the International Conference on General Education and University Curriculum Reform

From 12 June to 14 June five University of Macau (UM) faculty members and officers from the Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement (CTLE) participated in a major international conference on higher educational reform. Co-hosted by the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong-America Center, the conference focused on the dramatic changes being implemented to the university curriculum in Hong Kong and other Asian countries and in particular to the challenges of introducing general education to institutions and societies unfamiliar with the traditions of liberal arts education. Great emphasis was placed on the need to transform the teaching and learning cultures of universities through more holistic and experiential approaches and introduce radical changes to course design and assessment.

The conference drew many distinguished faculty and educational leaders from Asia, Europe and North America, including a full complement of Fulbright Scholars who are specialists in the field of general education. Some participants expressed interest in future cooperation with UM in general education. UM representatives shared their experience of successfully introducing UM’s own General Education Programme last year. Some UM representatives say that the conference helped enhance the ties between UM and other institutions, especially in the area of general education.
