The University of Macau (UM) is organizing a “Student Development Activity Series” with the theme of “Whole Person Education in Character and Expertise”, so that UM students, top management, alumni and members of the public can discuss such topics as justice, integrity, responsibility and values. UM is also launching an advanced course and workshop on student affairs, to enhance staff training and improve planning.

UM places equal emphasis on expertise acquisition and character development. To realize whole person education and nurture outstanding students with both expertise and integrity, UM has implemented an innovative “4-in-1” education model. From 16 May to 6 June, UM is holding a series of student development activities, including the Financial Guidelines Briefing for Student Organizations; Dialogue between Student Leaders and University’s Top Management: Justice, Integrity and Responsibility; an advanced course in student affairs launched by the Macau Student Affairs Institute; a workshop on student affairs planning; and the Seminar on “Ethics and Integrity of University Students”.

At the Financial Guidelines Briefing for Student Organizations held earlier, UM staff explained the importance and methods of financial management, hoping that students can learn proper ways of handling finances and develop good ethics that are responsible to themselves and others, before they enter the job market. At the Dialogue between Student Leaders and University’s Top Management: Justice, Integrity and Responsibility, UM’s University Council Chair Tse Chi Wai and UM Rector Wei Zhao shared their opinions on justice, integrity and responsibility with leaders of student organizations, and had heated discussions. The upcoming Seminar on “Ethics and Integrity of University Students” will be attended by UM’s Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) Simon Ho, President of the General Assembly of UM’s Alumni Association Ao Peng Kong, and representatives from the Commission Against Corruption of Macao SAR.

The advanced course in student affairs will be taught by experienced student affairs experts and educators from universities in the United States. They will impart advanced concepts and ideas as well as job specifications concerning student affairs-related work, in order to enhance the participants’ professional knowledge. During the course of the activity, UM’s top management will review through workshops the effectiveness of student affairs-related work, and discuss and plan relevant academic programmes and activities.
