Editor’s Words

Thirty years ago, three courageous and visionary young entrepreneurs co-founded the University of East Asia (UEA), predecessor of the University of Macau (UM), inaugurating modern higher education in the city. Ever since then, the university has been guided by the very purpose for which it was created: satisfying the needs of society by nurturing outstanding and committed graduates who earnestly practice the university motto, “humanity, integrity, propriety, wisdom and sincerity.”

In today’s highly competitive, knowledge-based world, one fact is indisputable: every country and region thirsts after the best people. This is also true for Macao, a city that has developed in leaps and bounds in recent years. To satisfy society’s demand for high-calibre people, UM founded the Honours College (HC), bringing itself one step closer towards becoming a world-class institution. HC selects the best of the best and provides this select group with specialized training through an additional parallel honours programme, in order to bring them on a par with top students from top universities.

Supplying high-calibre graduates for society is a fine tradition of UM. Another fine tradition is conferring, on a yearly basis, honorary doctorates upon distinguished individuals, in recognition of their remarkable achievements in their own fields as well as their contributions to advancing social progress. This year’s recipients of the honorary doctorates include the famous writer Dr. Louis Cha, who is better known by his pen name Jin Yong; the renowned U.S. scientist Prof. Francisco J. Ayala; local newspaper magnate Mr. Lei Seng Chon; and the esteemed educator Prof. Chia-Wei Woo.

This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of UM, a significant milestone in the history of UM—and a starting line of a journey towards new milestones. I would like to take this opportunity to wish UM a very happy birthday, and I hope that every UM member continues to work hard to nurture more excellent graduates for society!
