| (Right) FBA professor Lian Zhaotong receives the best paper award at ICSSM 11 |
Prof. Lian Zhaotong, professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Macau (UM), won the best paper at the 8th International Conference on Service System and Service Management (ICSSSM 11), co-organized by IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society, Tsinghua University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in the Business School of Nankai University, Tianjin.
The paper, co-authored by Prof. Lian and Prof. Zhou Wenhui, associate professor of South China University of Technology, titled “A Tandem Service System with a Sharing Buffer”, was selected from 467 candidate papers from 16 countries and regions. Only two papers were selected for the best paper award in the conference.
In the paper, it addresses a two-stage tandem service system. With the construction of Markov process, the study devises the stationary probability distribution of the system and the sojourn time distribution. Given some constrains on the minimum loss probability and the maximum awaiting time, the study found out the optimal buffer size and the shared-buffer size by minimizing the total buffer costs. The results show that by adopting the buffer-sharing policy, the customer acceptance fraction and the delivery reliability are more sensitive to buffer size comparing with the buffer-allocation policy.
ICSSSM is one of the major conferences on service systems and service management among the industries of International service management, operations management and business administration in the world. It has been successfully held in Beijing, Chongqing, Xiamen, Troyes, France, Melbourne and Tokyo. This year, a total of 467 papers were submitted to the conference, but only 130 papers were accepted for publication. Approximately 250 scholars from around the world attended the conference.
Prof. Lian is the programme coordinator of Business Information Systems Programme in UM’s FBA and the visiting professor of South China University of Technology. He is mainly engaged in logistics and supply chain management, service operations management, stochastic models and e-commerce studies. He earned his doctoral degree at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and received the postdoctoral education at Florida State University. After graduation, he has been working as a research staff in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts for years. Prof. Lian has published more than 20 papers at the prestigious journals in the area of operations research.
