This year UM continued to confer honorary doctorates upon distinguished individuals in recognition of their contributions to society. UM conferred a Doctor of Humanities honoris causa degree upon Father Lancelote Miguel Rodrigues, a Doctor of Science honoris causa degree upon Prof. Wang Xiaodong, a Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa degree upon Dr. Wong King Keung, and a Doctor of Humanities honoris causa degree upon Prof. Xu Jialu. Prof. Alan Norman Baxter, head of the Department of Portuguese, Prof. Wang Yitao, director of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), Prof. Simon Ho, vice rector (academic affairs) of UM, and Prof. Hao Yufan, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSH), delivered the citations for the four honorary degree recipients.

In his speech, Prof. Xu Jialu said: “It is very common for a university to confer the honorary degrees on quite a number of the candidates every year. Yet we took notice that the University of Macau adopts stringent procedures and high criteria for the selection of honorary degree candidates. This is what a world class university should do to maintain its high academic standards. Therefore we feel all the more honored to be awarded the degree, and we are deeply appreciative of that.”

He further added: “The University of Macau is actually quite ‘young’ in view of its thirty years of history. Yet, within such a short period of time, it has been able to carve its niche thanks to the full support from the local community and the great effort made by the faculty members of your University.”

Prof. Alan Norman Baxter praised Father Lancelote Miguel Rodrigues for having championed a wide range of successful welfare programmes in the region, with aid from international agencies. Father Lancelote Miguel Rodrigues has rendered welfare services to the Macao community, to China and to the international community for more than five decades. His work in conjunction with diplomatic representatives of Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States has earned him great respect from the international diplomatic community. And as a result of these relationships, he has been appointed as these countries’ consular representative in Macao. Over the years he has been awarded a number of prestigious honours at national and international levels, including the Order of the British Empire, the Order of Australia, and the Order of Infante D Henrique, of the Portuguese Republic.
