ContentFixed expressions are generally understood to be language specific phenomena since, after all, they, opaque to outsiders, often come across as one of the biggest blocks for L2 learners (Pawley and Syder 1983). However, in recent years, studies on cross-linguistic properties of fixed expressions, with support of corpus data, have revealed various interesting similarities and idiosyncrasies in languages (e.g. Biber’s notion of lexical bundle and its realization in different languages). However, the question of universality and idiosyncrasy in fixed expressions remains a challenging yet promising territory for further exploration. This talk will examine some of the corpus based evidence and bring in a discourse universals and typological perspective, in the hope to deepen our understanding of this important organizational feature of human language.
