Wireless LAN

The Wireless LAN is accessible to the University staff and students. If they have notebook or any device with 802.11b/g/n wireless module built-in, they can access our wireless network with an Wireless LAN account.

SSID

The service set identifier (SSID) just like the entry address of Wireless LAN system, at least each client user should choose one SSID for connecting to the Wireless LAN network with some parameters and settings which suitable for chosen SSID.

Due to different purposes, there are 5 SSID provided by UM Wireless LAN system:

UM_SECURED_WLAN

This SSID provides strong security mechanism and suitable for almost modern devices. All UM staffs are advised to use this SSID for Wireless LAN connection.

  • Data Security: High grade of security with strong encryption algorithm; please make sure that the hardware capacity of your device is sufficient to handle the operation of strong encryption algorithm with this SSID.
  • Standard of data encryption and authentication: WPA2 Enterprise with AES.
  • Devices which suitable for this SSID: Windows XP SP2 or above/ Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Macintosh / modern mobile phone or device.

UM_Wireless

This SSID provides middle level of security and great compatible solution for almost wireless LAN clients. If your device cannot connect with UM_SECURED_WLAN or instable, please try this SSID for connection.

  • Data Security: This SSID provides middle grade security to balance the compatibility between latest and traditional standards.
  • Standard of data encryption and authentication: EAP-LEAP/EAP-PEAP with 128bit dynamic WEP key.
  • Devices which suitable for this SSID: Installed Windows XP SP2 or above / traditional mobile phone/PDA.

UM_WLAN_PORTAL

This SSID provides an extremely easy connectivity; it is suitable for all portable devices which are weak compatible (such as old model mobile phone or PDA etc), use for short period of time;

  • Data Security: For balancing the connectivity and security, this SSID only provide secure authentication not the data encryption, so please DO NOT transmits any private or confidential data using this network.
  • Standard of data encryption and authentication: Open WEP without WEP-key.
  • Devices which suitable for this SSID: All devices which do not support EAP authentication.

UM_GUEST_PORTAL

This SSID provides service for all guests of UM, same as UM_WLAN_PORTAL. This SSID provided easy connectivity for all clients' connections to UM network for short period of time. Application may be submitted for an account by faculty secretary/department online for approval. The approved guest accounts can access only the Internet within a limited period.

  • Data Security: For balancing the connectivity and security, this SSID only provides a secure authentication but no data encryption, so please DO NOT transmits any private or confidential data using this network unless you are using other encryption methods by clients.
  • Standard of data encryption and authentication: Open WEP without WEP-key.
  • Devices which suitable for this SSID: All devices which do not support EAP authentication.
  • Notice: This SSID is only available for guests.

eduroam

This SSID provides roaming service for guest from eduroam member institutions, guest can use their wireless ID and password of the affiliated institution to login UM wireless LAN system. (Please click here for more details of eduroam service).

  • Data Security: This SSID supports two kind of encryption methods -- WPA/TKIP and WPA2/AES. WPA provides middle grade security while WPA2 provides higher grade of security with strong encryption algorithm. please make sure that the hardware capacity of your device is sufficient to handle the operation of strong encryption algorithm with this SSID.
  • Standard of data encryption and authentication: WPA with TKIP and WPA2 with AES.
  • Devices which suitable for this SSID:Windows XP SP2 or above/ Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Macintosh / modern mobile phone or device.
