1. Program Objectives
The main objectives of the M.A. Program in History are to allow students to specialize in a specific area or
subject in Chinese History or History of East-West Interactions and to develop and enhance their knowledge
and capabilities for doing independent research and writing in English as well as in Chinese. The M.A.
program is designed to attract and train both traditional and non-traditional college graduates who either
plan to earn a Masters degree as preparation for entrance into a doctoral program or want to gain necessary knowledge and skills for their professional career.

2. Admission Requirements
Admission will be in accordance with the University Admission Regulations on M.A. degree. In addition, the
MA students must have a BA degree in History or a BA degree in related fields. An official document of
English test score and interview are required.

3. Period of Study
Students will be required to complete all course work and the thesis within 2 academic years.

4. Teaching and Studying Areas
The Master Program in History shall have two major areas: History of China and History of East-West Interactions. History of China mainly teaches and researches in areas such as Modern Chinese History, Contemporary China, Social and Cultural History of China, History of Chinese Thought, Diplomatic History
of China, History of Chinese Arts and History of Macau, etc. The History of East-West Interactions, though
some of its areas overlap with the History of China, explores areas connected to other courses such as
History of Portugal, Diplomatic History of Portugal, Macau in World History, Western Civilization, Expansion
of Imperial Europe, World Maritime History, History of World, History of Asia and History of Western Arts, etc.

5. Medium of Instruction
English will be the primary language of instruction and Chinese will be supplementary. For Chinese History, however, the Chinese language will be the primary medium and English supplementary; and foreign
students may take courses in Chinese History taught in English.

6. Graduation Requirements
M.A. students in History will have to complete 24 credit hours of course work and write an original thesis
that demonstrates their ability to conduct independent research, critically interpret primary sources, and conceptualize their findings in a clear and concise manner. In order to ensure graduate students’ thesis
meet the appropriate level and approval of their advisor, graduate students must take courses of level 300
or above. History graduate students must maintain a 2.7 GPA in their all taken courses in order to graduate
with the M.A. degree.

7. Curriculum Design
All M.A. students must pass a comprehensive written examination (before submitting their thesis) within
their major area of concentration and a final oral examination (after submitting their thesis) covering their
thesis and all aspects of graduate course work. The exams are to be administered by the student’s advisor
and other appropriate members of the History faculty.
History courses for M.A. students are categorized as follows:
- Topical History Courses (450-499-level)
Focus on certain historical subjects and complex topics through reading literature and writing
papers.
- History Profession Courses (500-549-level)
As specially designed for history masters, the courses include Advanced Historical Theory and
Practice and Graduation Thesis Writing, which examines in-depth a particular historical topic and
write a thesis on the topic by emphasizing critical thinking and a thorough study of primary sources
and current historiography on the topic.
- Advanced History Courses in field of concentration (550-599 level)
These courses enable students to reach a high level of research, writing and critical analysis in
their specific fields and topics and learn to understand and conceptualize a wide range of complex historical phenomena. These Advanced Reading and Writing courses are taken under the guidance
of the M. A. thesis advisor where students do extensive detailed reading, research and critical
analysis
to help them complete a Master’s thesis of depth and quality.
M. A. students must complete 8 courses (24 units) to graduate, as follows:
A. 2 Topical History Courses (450-499 Level);
B. 2 History Profession Courses (500-549 Level), which include: Advanced Historical Theory and
Practice; Independent Research;
C. 2 Advanced History Courses in their field of concentration (550-549 Level)
D. 1 Advanced History Reading Seminar (550-599 Level)
E. 1 Advanced History Writing Seminar (550-599 Level)

Advanced Skills in Topical Research and Advanced Research and Writing
- Develop a high level of understanding of complex and many sided aspects of human experiences and historical ideas and concepts through a wide reading;
- Develop a high level of critical analysis of complex and various historical phenomena through broad discussion and debates
to explore the nature of history;
- Develop a high level of writing
and interpreting rich and complex historical events through intensive research and writing;
- Under the guidance of their thesis advisor, M. A. students will undergo detailed reading, extensive research and critical analysis to help them for their writing of the Master’s thesis so
in the end it can pass approval and become a publishable piece of historical literature;
- Enable students to reach historical depth in their research and write their Master’s thesis according to the stipulations, regulations and demands of the program.
